What is Typatone?

Typatone turns writing into music. Each letter of the alphabet is mapped to a specific note, so as you type, your words play as a melody. Your name sounds different from your friend's, a poem has its own tune, and repeating a word gives you a riff. The site describes it simply: make music while you write.

It comes from Jono Brandel and Lullatone, the same team behind Patatap, and has been online since 2015. Like Patatap it is built on the Two.js drawing library, so the letters animate on screen as you type. The makers have also published statistics on how people use it and open-sourced that data. It is quieter and more thoughtful than Patatap, which makes it a nice tool for poetry and classrooms.

What You Can Do

  • Hear every letter you type as a musical note
  • Turn names, sentences and poems into melodies
  • Watch letters animate on screen as they play
  • Browse statistics and open data on what people type
  • Use it straight away with no setup

How to Play Typatone

  2. Start typing anything: a name, a line of a poem, a message.
  3. Listen to the melody your words create.
