What is The Deep Sea?

The Deep Sea is one long page that starts at the ocean surface and keeps going down. A depth counter ticks along the side as you scroll, and the animals that live at each level appear next to you: sea turtles and sharks near the top, then glowing jellyfish, anglerfish and creatures that barely look real in the dark zones below.

It was made by Neal Agarwal, the developer behind neal.fun, and launched in December 2019. It passed a million views within a week and was picked up by My Modern Met, Creative Bloq and Nerdist. The fun is in the scale: the page gets darker and emptier the further you go, and it takes a surprisingly long time to reach Challenger Deep, where Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh first arrived in the Trieste in 1960. Along the way you pass famous wrecks like the Titanic.

What You Can Do

  • Scroll from the surface to the deepest known point in the ocean
  • See a live depth counter in metres and feet
  • Meet sea creatures at the depths where they actually live, with short notes on each
  • Spot landmarks such as the Titanic and the USS Johnston wrecks
  • Hear an ambient soundtrack that changes as you sink

How to Play The Deep Sea

  1. Open The Deep Sea in your browser on a computer or phone.
  2. Turn your sound on for the ambient audio.
  3. Scroll down slowly and read the notes on each creature you pass.
  4. Keep going until you hit the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
