What is PairDrop?

PairDrop is a browser-based take on AirDrop. Open the page on two devices on the same network and they appear to each other under random names. Choose a device, pick your files and the other side accepts them. It works between iPhones, Android phones, Windows, Mac and Linux, and you do not need an account.

Transfers are peer to peer. For devices outside your local network, you can pair them permanently using a 6-digit code or QR code, or join a temporary public room with a 5-letter code. It is an open source fork of Snapdrop, and its code is on GitHub.

Main Features

  • Send images, documents or text between devices
  • Works in any modern browser with nothing to install
  • Peer-to-peer transfer over the local network
  • Persistent device pairing by 6-digit code or QR code
  • Temporary public rooms for transfers over the internet
  • Accept a request before files are sent
  • Multiple files arrive as a ZIP
  • Available in many languages

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PairDrop free?

Yes. It is free, open source and has no paid plan.

Do both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi?

Not always. Same-network devices appear automatically, and pairing codes or public rooms connect devices elsewhere.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

Transfers run peer to peer. A relay server can help connect devices on complex networks when a direct route is not available.

Can I send text as well as files?

Yes. You can send documents, images and text.
