What is A.I. Duet?

A.I. Duet is a piano that talks back. You play a short phrase, and once you stop, a neural network listens and plays its own response. Sometimes it continues your idea, sometimes it goes somewhere unexpected. You do not need to know how to play: clicking random keys still gets you an answer, which makes it a fun way to explore melody.

Yotam Mann built it in 2017 with friends on Google's Magenta and Creative Lab teams, and it is one of the classic Google AI Experiments. It uses TensorFlow and open-source Magenta tools for the AI and Tone.js for the sound. You can play with your mouse, your computer keyboard or a MIDI keyboard, and the full code is available on GitHub.

What You Can Do

  • Play notes and hear an AI respond with its own melody
  • Use a mouse, computer keyboard or MIDI keyboard
  • Jam back and forth in a call and response
