What is Reading Coach?
Reading Coach is a free literacy practice tool from Microsoft for learners who can already decode words. It works in the browser at coach.microsoft.com and as a Windows app, and you can sign in with a school account or any personal Microsoft account.
Learners can read leveled passages from the ReadWorks library or create their own AI-generated story by choosing characters, a setting and a reading level, in 14 languages. As the story unfolds, readers choose what happens next, and the words they struggled with in one chapter are worked into the next. After each chapter, Reading Coach gives fluency coaching on the tricky words. Stories are moderated for safety and age appropriateness under Microsoft's Responsible AI guidelines, reading happens in the accessible Immersive Reader view, and badges and new characters reward effort while progress is tracked over time.
