What is Eigendrum?
Eigendrum lets you draw any shape and hear what it would sound like as a drum. Instead of playing a recording, it computes the real vibration modes of your outline with the finite element method, so every frequency you hear comes from the shape itself.
Tap the drumhead to strike it, move the striking point to hear how the sound changes, and see where the overtones fall and where the nodal lines sit. You can start from a circle, square or rectangle, draw your own outline or enter an equation, then copy a link or download the sound. It is open source on GitHub and was a popular Show HN in 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Eigendrum free?
Yes. It is free in your browser and open source.
How does Eigendrum make its sound?
It solves the real vibration modes of the shape you draw with finite elements, so the frequencies come from your outline, not a sample.
Why does Eigendrum sound different when I tap another spot?
Modes with a nodal line under the mallet stay silent, so the same drum sounds different depending on where you hit it.
