What is Illuminate?
Illuminate is an experimental learning tool from Google that transforms research papers and other dense content into AI-generated audio summaries, typically short conversations between two AI voices. It focuses on academic topics such as computer science, lets you adjust the style of the discussion, and is free to use with a Google account.
Academic papers are slow to read and hard to skim on the go. Illuminate converts a paper into a short spoken conversation that explains the key ideas, so you can listen during a commute and decide whether the full paper is worth reading. It does one job, audio explanations, while Google's NotebookLM covers broader note and source management. Access has been rolled out gradually, with a waitlist in some regions.
